La Voix de Notre-Dame Du Mont-Carmel

I am glad to report on several new and exciting projects that the Digital Media Center of the Younes and Soraya Nazarian Library, University of Haifa, undertakes in cooperation with the Sisters of the Monastery of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
The first contact with the Sisters was regarding their request for information about physical preservation.  During a meeting, we presented the preservation and digitization policies of the Digital Media Center of the Library. The Sisters were surprised and happy to see digital images of their monastery as well as other interesting Christian sites from different historical periods. Through easy access via internet, the Sisters were able to show these images to their sisters in the monastery as well. The pleasant personalities of the nuns, our common interest in preservation and its significance for our communities, made this meeting exciting and prepared the ground for future cooperation.
For this we did not have to wait long. When Dr. Zur Shalev requested the journal La Voix de Notre Dame du Mont Carmel for his research, it was only logical to turn to the Sisters with a reqest to scan this journal and make it accessible to the community via the Digital Media Center.  The sisters agreed to allow the library to scan the volumes available in their monastery feeling of being a part of the research community as well as the community at large in Haifa and beyond.
Immediately after we finished the scanning process, we returned the journal volumes to the Monastery. In order to receive the optimal preservation quality, the scanned pages are now enriched with metadata and soon will be loaded on our server and available via the internet.
During my meetings with the nuns and especially with the mother superior of the monastery, Sister Angela, we found another common project. During the last decade, the library scanned many pictures depicting the History of Israel and mandatory Palestine. It turned out that the monastery has a nice collection of pictures documenting the building of the current monastery since 1934 and of its previous building as well. These albums include pictures documenting details and items from the monastery that are not known to the general public. These pictures include the documentation of the Monastery of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
on Tchernichovski Street. The albums have been transferred to the media department of the library and are being scanned. Here are some examples.
