AB: Abstract
Mario Alinei's (1991) observations on the history of the Italian greeting ciao are reviewed, with the addition of numerous examples from the period between the end of the 18th century & the aftermath of WWII. It is argued that, in Contemporary Italian, the words slavo, schiavo & ciao are distinct lexical items; from a phonological point of view, ciao is a kind of interjection & semantically it represents the generic informal greeting both for meeting & leaving people. It is supposed to have originated in the second half of the 18th century. Its diffusion over the whole of Italy occurred in three stages: first from the Veneto-region to northern Italy, then to Rome & Sicily, & finally to the other regions as well. 16 References.
