Abstract: In 18th century Virginia, Robert "King" Carter owned over 300,000 acres containing many farms and plantations as well as some 1,000 slaves to work those plantations. He was a member of the Council of Virginia and was acting governor of the state for a time. He received a classical education in England, and corresponded widely both within the colony and with merchants overseas. His correspondence was transcribed and digitized by Edmund Berkeley, Jr., former director of special collections at the University of Virginia Library, and put online by the staff at UVA's Electronic Text center. Users can read and search the transcribed texts (in either original or modernized spelling) as well as from 1722-1723.

Abstract: The paper version of the Catalogue (published in 1994 by Backhuys Publishers, Leiden) contains over 3,100 species of fossil flies (Order: Diptera) from all over the world. Flies of the Order Diptera are one of the most successful groups of insects, comprising an estimated 120,000 taxonomically valid species. The online version has all of the contents of the original plus regular updates, so it provides the most current information on fossil dipteran taxonomy. The catalog listings are by Family (each family name is a link). Database entries include a two- to three-paragraph summary of diversity, habitat, geographic and temporal range and classification notes for each family, and a list ofincluded in the database.

It contains over 240 ancient maps of Jerusalem 1486 to early 20th century, and basic information concerning the map-makers and the history of cartography in Jerusalem.
Abstract: Jointly sponsored by the Historic Cities Center within the Department of Geography at Hebrew University and the Jewish National and University Library, the Historic Cities Web site contains maps, literature, documents, books, and other relevant material concerning the past, present, and future of historic cities. Visitors will find a wide array of historic city maps and views dating from 1486 to 1720. The scanned maps are searchable alphabetically, by date, and by individual cartographer. Additionally, a bit of information is provided about each cartographer. Overall, the site contains close to two hundred individual city maps and renderings, ranging from medieval Heidelberg to Casablanca.
