Services for Visitors

Use of Library Collections and Services

Entrance to the Library is free. Most of the collection is open shelf; In some cases, advance coordination is necessary. Library Policies and Procedures (in Heb.)

Use of the Library Catalog and the Index to Hebrew Periodicals is free. Access to other electronic databases is limited to the university's community (except for walk-in users).

We advise visitors to conduct a preliminary search before coming to the library, to verify that the materials required are available.

Visitors who need assistance in searching for materials are welcome to make use of our reference service, offered in reference desks in the library. The service is provided for a 40 NS fee. It includes searching the Library Catalog and the Index to Hebrew Periodicals.

Visitors from Other Universities

Post graduate students and staff from other universities in Israel, as well as Open University students (at all levels of study) are entitled 
to borrowing rights, provided they submit a letter of guarantee from their home institution library. Such an arrangement entitles the user to the following privileges:

- The right to borrow up to 5 items simultaneously, subject to any loan

- conditions set with regard to the various collections.

- Ordering books via the Library Catalog.

- Access to electronic databases.

Free reference services.
- Interlibrary Loan Services, which enables ordering books, theses and photocopies of items that are not available in our library, from other

libraries in Israel and abroad (this service is provided for a fee).

Subscription to Library Services

Visitors who are interested in making frequent use of the library's services are welcome to purchase a subscription at the Circulation desk located near the entrance to the library. Subscribers are entitled to the following privileges:

Reference Services within the Library & Remote Assistance

 

Face-to-face assistance

The service is tailored to the changing individual needs and abilities of our clients, and focuses on providing tools for locating information independently. The service includes:

- A reference interview to determine the patron's information needs. 

- Locating the appropriate information and retrieving it. 

- Providing expertise on independent information searches.

Remote Assistance

The library encourages the promotion of information literacy among users and independent use of the library and its resources. For this purpose, our online trainings, videos, and guides are available online. Assistance is provided at the library reference desk and via remote reference services. Computers and Wi Fi

Library visitors are welcome to use 132 public computer stations which are located in the central wing (the entrance floor) and in the Northern library wing. In addition, 13 public computers are located in the reading room on the ground level (floor 0) of the Southern wing. 

Fifteen additional computers are available in Class 166 on the first floor of the central wing (use of computers in class 166 is possible at times when no training is offered). Multimedia stations for watching and listening to audio and video segments, as well as a station for basic video editing are located at the reserved collection. The circulation desk offers eight laptops for up to a 4 hour loan period. Students interested in working on public computers at the university are invited to use the computer classes spread throughout the campus. Various software programs are installed in these classes.

There are several wireless networks in the campus. More information is available on the computer and information systems division website (in Heb.)


SPSS Software

The SPSS software package is installed on the following computers in the Library:

Reading room at level 0 of the south wing: two computers, identified with signs

Room 281 in the entry level of the Library: all computers in the room

Classroom 166: all computers in the room.

Circulation Service

The Circulation Desk, which is located at the entrance to the library, is responsible for lending library items and discharging them once they are returned, supplying books that were ordered from the shelf or from other readers, and regulating library services to readers.

University of Haifa students and academic/administrative staff are entitled to borrow up to 500 items. MA & PhD students and academic staff from other Israeli institutions of higher education may borrow 5 books at a time and are permitted access to databases. They are required to present a letter of guarantee from the central library at their institution to the Circulation Department. When the Library is closed, books may be returned to the bin located at the fourth floor of Eshkol Tower, or deposited through the opening at the right of the Library's entrance.

Computers and Technological Equipment Loans

The library offers laptops, cables and chargers for loan at the circulation desk for up to 4 hours. In addition, there are five mobile phone charging stations positioned throughout the library: at the public computer stations across the reference desk, near the reserved collection, on floor 1.5 of the general collection near the maps, in the group work area on the first floor, and in the old reference area.
